The Fauxbi

I’ve had these amazing Japanese fabrics for a few of months now, and I finally did something with them! They were gifted to me by my cousin-in-law, Ryan, and his wife, Alexandra, who lived in Japan for a number of years due to Ryan’s station in the Navy. I had about a Fat Quarter of each one, so I didn’t have any room for error; consequently, I furiously debated with myself as to what I should make out of them. I finally got inspired and made this sort-of reversible faux obi, or “Fauxbi,” as I like to call it. It’s my first time making such an accessory, and I think it turned out pretty well. I think it adds a bit of flare and personality to a solid-color ensemble, in lieu of a traditional belt.  There is still more fabric in the goody bag they gave me, and I can’t wait to get started on those!

Look! Jen Harrold made this cool pillow from some of the Super Mario inspired fabric I designed! According to her, it only takes a fat quarter of fabric to add a little personality to your naps. You can read all about it and her other cool craft projects on her blog! Thanks, Jen!

Draw 365, Day 26 - Tangles

This started out with me screwing around, seeing if I could make a seamless pattern with intertwining loops. After I filled the whole page with the repeat, I decided it would be nice to make a tangled rope pattern, but ended up not having the patience to detail in the whole page, so I finished one tile and made a repeat from my phone. Not bad, all in all. It’s worth a polish, and I’d love to sew something using a textile with this design.

So, I’m a little obsessed with making patterns. Yeah.

Draw 365, Day 23 - Shards

I didn’t really know what to call this, but it compelled me to look up videos on how to make wooden inlays. That’s something I would love to do one day.

Draw 365, Day 22 - Houndstooth

‘Cause they kinda look like dogs, see? Hyuk. If you like houndstooth, but are more of a cat person, I have my “Meowstooth” pattern for sale in my Spoonflower store. I LOVE tessellations! I hope to design more in the future.

Draw 365, Day 21 - Funky Dandelions

I bought myself my first graphed Moleskine to help me design textile patterns. I stitched some tiles together using a picture of my drawing and an app on my phone, and I’d say it tiles up okay. Not completely seamless, but I can see how this book can help me brainstorm patterns “on the go.”

Geek Chic - Space Kimono Dress (Orion Nebula)

If you are like me and every other dork, you love space. You may also be obsessed with science fiction. A few months ago, for my birthday, I splurged on some custom cotton silk fabric printed with an image of the Orion Nebula from Spoonflower. I straight-up stole this photo from the NASA website, did a little bit of manipulation and made a seamless pattern out of it. I finally did something with it and sewed up this kimono dress. I also added pockets, because, duh. I think it’s a good way to express your obsession without being too literal with your chosen space-related fandom. Geek Chic - Assassin’s Creed Hoodie Dress

I made this dress and took these photos a long, long time ago, and I just realized I never posted about it. With the release of Assassin’s Creed 3, I figure it was an appropriate time to finally document this. I designed and printed this fabric at Spoonflower, and fashioned a hoodie dress out of it, complete with the trademark hood, of course. This thing is really comfortable, and really easy to put on, but is a bit too juvenile and nerdtastic for most company, so I mostly wear it as a cover-up over my unitards and dancewear when I go to dance class. It’s also reversible, but since the opposite side is mostly textured white cotton, it ends up looking a lot like a nurse’s outfit, which I neglected to anticipate, so I wear it on the printed side. I think I should have made the reverse side red, but maybe I’ll use that idea and make a regular hoodie from this fabric. Oh well, next time.
